Insights: Fast transition in technology and CPU’s response to the changing times

By Cyrus A. Natividad

Technology in action – The CPU Community is a witness of how technology shapes university programs and events.

Some thirty years ago, people started saying goodbye to their Remington and Underwood typewriters. Correction fluids also started losing business as typewriters became obsolete. At the same time, computers and electronic gadgets began to dominate offices and businesses. Computers did everything: from encoding to storage and retrievals; one is able to format and edit documents in minutes—sometimes, with just a touch of a finger.

The early desktop or personal computers (PCs) were popularly known as the IBM PC and its clones. It was followed by Apple Macintosh and later the Commodore Amiga throughout the ‘80s and the ‘90s. Those were all programmable computers equipped with a keyboard, a monitor, and drives for floppy disks. These computers were sold mostly for business and scientific operations.

It didn’t stop there. Innovation continued and the transition from one innovation to another got faster and faster. New computer models were produced one after the other, modifying the old office with sleek portable units. Excess items included boxes of floppy disks for operating and storing data. These were disposed of or discarded when operating disks and software were later imbedded in the system.

Laptops, notebooks, and tablets, smartphones equipped with user-friendly interface and programs, came later. New models arrive with new systems. Smart companies use computers and electronics technology including the internet to create a whole new way of doing business.

People enjoy the convenience that computer technology brings to individuals, the family, and the community. Now, where does this end? It was once said that “the trouble with our age is all signposts and no destination.”

The problem lies in how the users act as catalysts in making the computer and the internet trends work towards a unified system for human beings and society. We are glad to know that there are geniuses lending themselves to the community to ultimately create newer technology that will lead up to another period of ease and betterment for humanity.

CPU has also invested much in new infrastructures in relation to the software development and the internet. All offices are connected with a LAN. The university website, www.cpu.edu.ph, is one of the top websites in Western Visayas for the last 2 years. The social media accounts of CPU are always buzzing with posts. Soon, the university will have an RF ID System at the CPU Elementary School, and then for the whole university for security purposes. There are also plans for an online enrolment system and payment.

It is best to keep in mind though that at stake is not the equipment but the person behind it.

For Central Philippine University, personnel development comes ahead. Most of the trainings for employees are designed to provide or improve their skills, expertise, and attitudes. Suggestions and proposals on procurement of needed tools and equipment come from the end users. The University Computer Service Center (UCSC) are on hand in helping the departments and units in the University.

The transitions are fast but the university is ready to keep abreast with technology.

More than Video Blogs (VLOGS)

By Nestle G. Taala

Yaneshka is also a well-rounded daughter who does painting, karate and modelling on the side.

Yaneshka Aparicio, a grade 5 pupil of CPU Elementary School, is the girl behind the viral video “Alas Dose Na, Fresh pa ba kayo?” where she flaunts out to the whole world her freshness under the prickly heat of the sun.

The video which was uploaded on their Facebook page Chaela and CJ Moments earned 1 million views, 17 thousand shares and 16 thousand likes online. During an interview on “Centralian Profiles” on August 7 with Yaneshka and her mother, Chrysta June Aparicio, they revealed that the result was unexpected. They were both overwhelmed because some people were asking for a photo with Yaneshka, and those who are outside Iloilo were requesting for a shout out.

But she is more than those video blogs. Yaneshka is also a well-rounded daughter who does painting, karate, and modeling on the side. In fact, she passed the audition of World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) modeling category although they were unable to push through due to financial constraints. Instead, Yaneshka focused on her studies in which she excels as well. In 2016, Yaneshka was featured in People’s Choice of Sikat Ka Iloilo for helping her mother make munchkins which allows her mom some extra income. Mom Chrysta June indeed feels blessed to have Yaneshka for a daughter.

Yaneshka, for her part, inspires fellow Centralians to be confident with themselves, “Be confident and don’t be shy to try new things because there is no harm in trying.”

Acceptance Speech of Francis Immanuel O. Fuentespina, OSCI

Francis Immanuel O. Fuentespina, with high honors, encourages the graduates to trust in the timing and purpose of God for their lives.

Immanuel O. Fuentespina is a Ten Outstanding Elementary School Pupils of Iloilo Awardee, 2018. This speech was delivered during the awarding ceremony at Diamond Jubilee Hall, Mabini St., Iloilo City last March 16, 2018

According to Pele, one of the greatest football players who ever lived, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do”.

Good afternoon to everyone. I feel honored to be one of the Ten Outstanding Elementary School Pupils of Iloilo. Like the other awardees, I am very excited to receive the award and I feel proud to be part of the Outstanding Student Circle of Iloilo.

I would like to show my humble and sincere appreciation however, to the people who helped me in my accomplishments. Without them, and without their help, I would not be where I am today. I feel truly blessed. “Thank you” to my teachers who are very supportive. You are my source of knowledge. To mention some of them: Thank you Ma’am Saladar, my Grade VI-EXCEL adviser. Thank you for spending time with me before, during, and after the OSCI screenings. Thank you for always giving me the encouragement. To my subject teachers and other grade level advisers-thank you for supporting me and for letting me join different activities and competitions. To our CPU Elementary School Principal, Ma’am Janet P. Jaco, thank you for encouraging me to join the TOESP and for being proud of my achievements. To CPU, my Alma Mater, for giving us EXCEL or Exemplary Education for Life. To my football varsity team family, thank you for the support, and for giving me some time off during some of our practice games. Thank you Lion’s Club International for making me part of the family. I enjoy our Saturday outreach activities. I only have simple words to say to my family, but what you did for me is always special. Mama, Papa, my siblings, Ida and BenJ, thank you for all your efforts, your energy, financial help, and prayers. You have made many sacrifices just to provide me with needed support. Salamat gid to the rest of my family. I know that you are more proud of my achievements than I am. To Mama Alice for always praying for us—you are our strongest supporter. Most of all, I thank the Lord God Almighty. Without Him and His perfect will, everything would not be possible. He is the source of all that is good. I praise Him and I thank Him for who I am.

To all the other awardees, congratulations!

To OSCI and the organizers, thank you for this award. This will be one of my most unforgettable experiences. May this activity inspire more elementary pupils to strive hard and excel in whatever they do.

I hope that we will serve as role models to others—by studying well, and by being a source of inspiration to those around us.

God bless us all and to God be the highest glory.

Elementary school pupils donate to family of security guard—victim of vehicular accident

Mrs. Saul (right-center) receives the cash donation from Elementary Grade 4 teachers.

On the night of January 16, 2018, a devout father was on his way to work when he was hit by a public utility jeepney and died instantly. The driver of the jeepney ran away and is still free from jail while the case is under investigation.

The victim, Rodel Saul, was a Security Guard detailed at CPU Elementary School. Rodel loved the elementary school pupils like he loved his own children. The family suffered after the accident took away the life of the only breadwinner of the family. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

As acknowledgement for Saul’s hard work and kindness towards the students while working at CPU, Grade IV-Excel pupils collected love gifts from their classmates and friends and donated the amount to Mrs. Rogin Gallego Saul, wife of Rodel. “The love gift shall go a long way to help us during our time of bereavement.” The Saul family gave thanks to the students and their class adviser, Ms. Ofelia Cerbo.
